Working on Motivation, Exercise

I’ve been listening to Tony Robbins lately. Not just for weight loss but for other areas of my life as well. He’s really quite inspirational. He’s saying in order to make permanent changes, we need to get “disturbed” about where we are and work on changing our belief system, that something isn’t “that bad”. It’s about getting totally honest with yourself instead of pussy footing around the adjectives. Yes, 50 pounds overweight is that bad. Yes when I look at myself naked in the mirror it is disturbing. Yes my ass is fat whether in or out of those jeans. LOL.

My mother has been in ICU the last 3 weeks, so the only exercise I’m getting is walking to her room, but I am taking total advantage of it. I walk briskly to get my heart rate up. It’s a fair distance from one end of the parking lot to her room in ICU so it’s sort of like “heart training” and I do it at least 3 times per day. Now I just hope all those health gurus are right when they say 3 ten minute walks are as good as one 30 minute walk. Today I will be adding on walking from my house at least once. I’m actually fairly close and so have decided there really is no excuse.

I Want To Be Valerie, Not Kirstie!

Valerie Bertinelli and Kirstie Alley have always been two of my favorite female celebs. I have to say that I am so jealous of Valerie these days. She took over as spokesperson for Jenny Craig and has never looked back. While Kirstie once again gained back all the weight she had lost when she was Jenny Craig’s spokesperson, Valerie has moved on to bikini ads, red carpets, and magazine covers. She is absolutely in the prime of life again. I am so happy for her! Now I just want to be her. LOL.

Instead, I seem to be more like Kirstie. If you added all the pounds I’ve lost and regained… and here I am again trying to go down the scale instead of up.

I was doing pretty good with the weight training and swimming at the Senior Center, but then my mother had emergency surgery and has been in ICU for the last 3 weeks. What I do to keep in shape now is park on the far end of the parking lot and walk briskly to her room in the hospital about 3 times a day. It does at least get my heart rate up. They say 3 ten minute walks is as good as 1 thirty minute walk. I hope they’re right. LOL. I’m working on just walking to the hospital next. It’s not that far, but it seems like I always am headed for the store or somewhere afterward, so I don’t do it. Even in my own ears, that sounds like another excuse. Maybe I’ll make today different.

Dieting (Again) With Kirstie Alley

The "after" after

I knew something was wrong when I wasn’t seeing Kirstie Alley doing the Jenny Craig commercials anymore. I did happen to notice that she stayed on the “I lost 75 lbs.” mantra an awfully long time without losing any more. Then one day recently in the grocery store I saw a picture of her on the cover of The National Enquirer, of course, and to me she looked bigger than ever.  Come to think of it, I haven’t seen Valerie now in a while either.

The other day I found a new site for weight loss. Kirstie has developed her own line of weight loss products. The whole theme is centered around “go organic”. She states that she has already lost 20 lbs. with her new products, since her money has allowed her access to some of the greatest scientists in the world. Personally I would find it hard to go completely organic as in many cases it doesn’t make any difference, it just costs more.  She has named her line “Organic Laison”.

I’ll be curious to see how she does. I’m really hoping she’s successful. I have always really liked her as an actress, and have many times felt humiliated for her.  Who knows, if it ends up working, maybe I’ll “go organic”. LOL

5 Ways To Cheat The Weight Loss Scale for Motivation and Inspiration

I came across a great website this morning if you happen to be on the WeightWatchers journey. For me, I think it’s probably one of the easiest weight loss programs around as it is pliable to any situation you happen to find yourself in. The name of the site is “Dotti’s Weight Loss Zone“. She has lost, regained some and lost again, but what is really super about her site is she has umpteen restaurants where she has broken all the food into point values. I was able to find nutritional info on her site that I couldn’t even find on the company site itself. While she is an obvious WeightWatcher, she has everything broken down whether you’re watching points, calories, carbs or fat grams. Her story and photos are very inspirational, and she’s also got a couple of recipe books in pdf format you can download. I think it’s a terrific resource.

I guess for a lot of celebrities lately, the answer to weight loss comes in a little can of liquid. I had heard they were coming out with this, but didn’t know it was available now. The drink is called “Celcius” and has been shown to burn up to 100 calories per can.

Janice Haley, Founder of Celsius, says that the product works “by raising metabolism and providing sustained energy. Celsius drinks sustain energy and calorie burning with EGCG from green tea, ginger, B vitamins, and chromium, and caffeine and contain no sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial colors.” It comes in assortment of flavors. I’m all for anything that burns calories from my eating or drinking it! It appears to be available either by ordering, or supposedly you can pick it up at your nearest Walgreens or GNC. I’ll have to look the next time I’m there. One review says that while the ingredients appear to help sustain energy and rev metabolism, it says the individual ingredients would be more effective taken naturally on their own, vs. extracts, etc. Of course they have their own weight loss supplement they’re pushing.

And now, TA-DA! Whether you’re constantly dieting or just watching what you eat for health reasons, we all at some point need a little “inspiration” and “motivation“. One of the ways to keep motivated is by watching the scale go down. Sometimes, even when we’ve been good and done all the right things, it needs a little help. This is my solution: 5 ways to cheat the weight loss scale for motivation and inspiration.

  1. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning. You almost always weigh less in the morning than later through out the day no matter how good you are.
  2. Make sure you go to the bathroom first, no matter what time of day you weigh yourself. A gallon of water (urine) weighs 8 lbs. You do the math. If you’ve ever heard the comedian Ron White, then you’ve probably heard his joke about being one good “poop” away from a new size. Think about it.
  3. If you must weigh yourself with clothes on (like in a weight watchers meeting) when you get home take your clothes off and weigh them. Deduct.
  4. If at all avoidable, never weigh with shoes on. If you must, follow instructions for 3 above.
  5. Never weigh yourself with wet hair, unless you’re already skinny enough for people to say “she can’t weigh ____lbs. soaking wet” or your hair is so short you’ve been mistaken for a guy.

That’s all I’ve got for today. If you know more ways to “weigh” for motivation and inspiration, I’d love to hear them. Be sure and leave your secrets below. LOL

When Diet and Exercise Go A Bit Too Far

Madonna Now

Madonna Now

I’m not a big one for following celebrities or pop-culture. I rarely pay attention unless something really special happens and it hits the regular news vs. a magazine or one of those channels like TMZ. I hadn’t really heard much about Madonna since she adopted her last child and I guess I thought she was just a lot less active, kind of grew up and into Mamahood. It turns out I just don’t read the right stuff.

Something that caught my attention this morning though is all the hub-bub on whether she’s healthy or not. As I dug into the story, I was really taken aback by the picture of her. My God, and some people (men) think this is beautiful. Her trainer says she “looks like a 19 year old”. I’ll tell you what, if one of my daughters looked like this I would be taking them to the closest shrink. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Which leads me to the next question. How does she hold onto a 22 year old boyfriend looking like that? I remember when she looked voluptuous, and make up takes care of the rest, but this? She’s over 50 and this looks like going on 90. He must be in it for the money.

I know that a there are a lot of body-building women that would give Atlas a run for his money, but personally I’ve never found that attractive. They end up with no boobs, a body hard as rock, how does someone enjoy cuddling up to that?

I guess this is the flip side of being fat. I don’t find that attractive either, and I guess I would be a poster child for what not to do to keep fit and healthy. I’m glad to know there’s a happy medium for us regular folks. Maybe I’m just a little jealous. I would love to be in the position that people actually told me I needed to gain some weight. LOL

Weight Loss Tidbits

With all the news about the Swine Flu Pandemic, it’s hard to find too much about weight loss, but I found a couple of things that I thought may be of interest.

This one is a little scary. I guess now that Alli has been released for sale on the European markets, they’re having a hard time getting pharmacists and chemists to follow the rules.

In the US if you go to purchase a bottle of Alli, they are supposed to check to make sure you are over 18 yrs. old and a BMI of 28 or more. Evidently one reporter doing a story overseas is very tiny and a BMI of 18.4 and had no trouble getting Alli at all. They did not give any of the warnings of the side affects like they are supposed to, and they didn’t warn that a person who isn’t overweight taking Alli could develop eating disorders (that one I didn’t even know about).

Change of subject- I guess Lindsay Lohan seems to be going from uncontrollable drug addict and alcoholic, to anorexic. They say she’s losing all the weight to get the attention of her lesbian lover that recently left her. We all find our own motivation in our own ways. LOL.

And last but not least- I’m sure this is a shocker, Oprah.com carries a statement that neither Winfrey nor Dr. Oz has endorsed the sale of acai products for weight loss or other uses. I wonder how I knew that when I was looking at all those sites. LOL

Have a great day everyone, and stay healthy!

Damn You, Valerie!

valerieOkay, not really. I love Valerie Bertinelli. I used to think she was so cute in “One Day At A Time” when I was younger. And yes, I’m one of the million who could not understand how a girl like her could marry Van Halen (bad boy). I remember seeing her in a couple of made-for-tv-movies but I hadn’t seen her in awhile.

I’m sure everyone saw when she took Kirstie Alley’s job away as spokesperson for Jenny Craig. Evidently Kirstie Alley’s rowing the same boat to weight gain that I am. LOL. I haven’t seen many commercials for awhile featuring either one of them, although the “rags” are more than happy to keep us informed of every ounce poor Kirstie gains back.

Yesterday as I sign on to AOL (almost online) I end up staring right into the face of sweet Valerie and the story of her posing in a bikini on the cover of people magazine. She looks like  a 20 yr. old and you could never tell she’s had a child! Me, I still carry part of my “baby weight” in what we non-affectionately call an “apron”. She’s  almost 50! She said she hadn’t worn a bikini in 20 years. On top of that she’s written a new book about her weight loss called “Losing It: How I Got My Life Back One Pound At A Time”. I don’t think we’ll be seeing her on the front page of the Enquirer with a story about how she gained all her weight back any time soon.

While she didn’t have to pay for her food like you or I would, according to her she attributes most of her weight loss to 10,000 steps per day. She didn’t get a personal trainer until she wanted to lose the last 15 or 20 lbs. She doesn’t even “wrinkle” right for her age (you know, one of those damn natural beauties). I have 3 pedometers and I can’t get even 1 to work right, although after today I’m going to try again with my favorite one.

So I got to thinking.

1) I should have been doing my lifestyle changes with her instead of just watching. I may have been done now too.

2) I don’t think I like Heather Locklear much either. LOL.

3) I have run out of excuses. The last one I was clinging to was being post menopausal, it’s harder to lose (especially if you don’t move a lot).

Too many of these women that look so good are my age or older! Look at Meryl Streep, Faye Dunaway, Goldie Hawn (who does look like hell without makeup, but she’s in great shape). There really is no excuse for letting myself go like this and not doing something about it. So, I’m off again to log my points and make another stab at the gym. (If I can find parking I might even go in this time).

Thank you contactmusic.com for the pic. At least in this one it looks like she could use a little work on those underarms. LOL.
