Weight-Loss Tidbits For Friday-

Just want to make sure everyone saw the recall of 4 weight loss supplements sold by Young You Corp, according to the LA Times. These are known as Slimbionic, One Weight Loss Pill 30, SlimDemand and Botanical Weight Loss. Evidently they were basically only sold on the company’s two websites and in their store in Tarzana, California.

Young You Corp. contained the drug ingredient sibutramine. While the drug is approved by the FDA, it is not supposed to be in over the counter supplements, and it wasn’t listed on the product labels. Of course the Executive Director of the company says he knew nothing about this, that the manufacturer (who is in China) did this all on their own.

In another little noteworthy news item according to the LA Times again, a couple of researchers at the Indiana University have manipulated 2 hormones into one synthetic hormone. One single shot have produced a 25% decrease in body weight and a 42% decrease in fat mass in just one week. I can’t wait until that one hits the market! LOL.

Evidently the magazine OK! is having financial problems. Apparently it’s bad enough that they’re reportedly using a picture of Jessica Simpson taken and used in 2007 as the cover for their August 2009 issue. There probably wouldn’t be much wrong with that except that it’s pretty deceitful, misleading, etc. Oh well, what do I care? I don’t read it, except it’s one more example of untrue media.

On another note, a young dieter from the Wisconsin Weightloss Examiner writes an article about using vinegar in weight loss efforts might work. What I found amusing is that she is quite young and writes about this as if it’s something new. Any of us “old timers” not already know about vinegar and weight loss? I didn’t think so.

I don’t know if anyone remembers hearing about the new discovery of “brown fat” in the body and how it’s supposed to burn calories faster than regular fat, but they have now discovered a way to make the body produce brown fat and are experimenting with that. To me, white fat is ugly, but imagining a big pile of brown fat, yuck! Yet, if it works don’t let me stand in the way of science.

I think that’s enough to think about for a Friday. Can everybody say “Casual Friday”? LOL

Whale Vs. Mermaid

I received this in my inbox this morning. I don’t know who to give credit to, but I thought it was well worth sharing.

Mermaid or a Whale

Recently, in large city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym .. It said:

¨THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?¨

A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

To Whom It May Concern:

Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans).. They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia . Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don’t exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don’t  have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don’t have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a piece of chocolate with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren’t heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, ¨Good gosh, look how smart I am…¨

I personally am trying to trim down the whale factor, but I will probably never be a mermaid. I thought this was very good. LOL

When All Was Said And Done…

Not eating the bagel yesterday may have been a good thing. With the bagel and cream cheese calorie count came in at over 500. Yesterday just having cereal, even with having a small blueberry muffin as a snack later in the morning, the calorie count came in at just a little over 300. Not bad.

Where I really saved in the calories and fat was having a WeightWatchers Smart Ones for dinner last night. Like I said, I’ll have to get used to the smaller portions, but even with 2 chicken drumsticks (no skin of course) it still came in low on the calorie and fat chart compared to what I’ve been eating.

I just might be able to pull this off. LOL. Now if I could just get my fat butt to start walking again, I’d have it made!

Breaking The Bagel and Cream Cheese Habit

After posting here yesterday I decided to add up all my calories and see how much damage I was actually doing to myself. This morning I skipped the bagel and just went for the raisin bran. I was hungry a lot earlier than I usually am so I will have to see how many calories with the extra snack or two I had, whether to incorporate the bagel back in. LOL

I did switch to the SmartOnes for dinner, so I’ll see how that goes. That should be a no-brainer, I just need to get used to the smaller portions (which is always a good thing).

I still don’t have a scale, so if I actually regain control of myself I guess I will have to be able to feel it in my clothes and see it for now. I guess I wouldn’t be too unhappy if everything worked well and when I finally do get on a scale there was a pretty good size weight loss. LOL

Living In The FastFood Lane

Staying in a hotel has definitely put a wrinkle in any kind of dieting I was doing. There is no kitchen, so we are at the mercy of restaurant take-out and fast food places. I do on occassion come up with something we can cook in the microwave, but that is very limited not being by myself. It hits me now as I write this that it would be a perfect opportunity to live on WeightWatchers SmartOnes, Lean Cuisine, etc. instead of the fastfood crap I’ve been eating.  The only problem is I am not alone. I would have to buy double for my BF and my mother, but there is so much of a variety, I really should give it a try.

I was so happy that I have basically given up drinking. That cuts approx. 540 calories a nite from my intake. Unfortunately, I’ve taken up eating a bagel and creme cheese for breakfast, so that hasn’t worked out so well. I eat them because along with my cereal, it helps me stay full longer. It just isn’t at all diet friendly.

My oldest daughter had to work this weekend, so I got a repreive on the local Aids Walk. 6 miles I was definitely not in shape for. There really is no excuse for that as she told me about it months ago. I wish I could find my incentive to exercise. I know “my health” but apparently that’s not important enough for me or I’d quit smoking too. LOL
